TEADAL Final Event Wrap-Up: Advancing Federated European Data Spaces
The TEADAL project (Trustworthy, Energy-Aware Federated DAta Lakes along the computing continuum) successfully concluded its Final Event via an online webinar titled “Advancing Federated European Data Spaces – The TEADAL Perspective”. The webinar, held on 2 October 2025, brought together researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss the future of federated data spaces and to showcase TEADAL’s key outcomes.

Event Highlights
The 2-hour online event featured a structured programme, leading from strategic insights to technical innovations and policy-oriented dialogue:
Keynote Introduction
Prof. Pierluigi Plebani (POLIMI) opened the event by framing the vision and goals of the TEADAL project, underlining its mission to enable privacy-aware, energy-efficient data sharing across federated data environments spanning cloud and edge computing.
Technical Demonstrations
Experts from partner institutions presented TEADAL’s core technological advancements, including:
- The TEADAL architecture, featuring federated catalogue mechanisms and the privacy-aware control plane, presented by Fernando Castillo from Technical University Berlin. Download presentation here.
- A privacy-preserving toolbox supporting trustworthy federated data lakes, presented by Eduardo Brito from Cybernetica. Download presentation here.
- New approaches for metadata federation to improve data availability and discoverability, presented by Alessio Carenini, Cefriel. Download presentation here.
Panel Discussion – The Future of Data Spaces
A forward-looking panel brought together TEADAL partners, policy advisors, and stakeholders to discuss lessons learned from project pilots, implications of European data governance frameworks (such as GDPR and the Data Spaces Support Centre), and sustainable strategies for adopting federated data infrastructures across sectors took place following the technical presentations.
Panelists included representatives from BDVA, TRUSTEE project, and Data Spaces Support Center, moderated by Prof. Plebani.
The discussion highlighted key lessons learned from the TEADAL pilots and the integration of its technologies, demonstrating both the technical feasibility and the organisational challenges of deploying federated data solutions across heterogeneous environments. Speakers reflected on the evolving landscape of European Common Data Spaces, emphasising how regulatory frameworks such as the GDPR, together with coordination initiatives like the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC), are shaping interoperable, trustworthy, and legally compliant data sharing. The conversation also explored sustainable models for federated data governance across industries, stressing the need for clear roles, shared standards, and long-term incentives for participation. Finally, attention turned to next steps for real-world adoption, including the role of open-source components, stronger policy–research partnerships, and pathways to ensure continuity and impact of TEADAL results beyond the project’s formal closure.

Looking Ahead
The TEADAL Final Event marked the culmination of the project’s efforts to build trustworthy, privacy-preserving, and energy-efficient federated data lake technologies within a European context. As stakeholders continue to adopt and expand upon these tools, TEADAL’s contributions are expected to influence future European Common Data Space initiatives and federated data governance models.
